Christy Turlington Quit Runway Because It Was ?Just Not Fun?

While Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell defined Britannia cool during their supermodel reign in the 1990s, Christy Turlington was the international face of a fashion revolution that saw models elevated to a status the fashion world hasn’t seen since.

The quotes come from an interview Christy did with Iman for Humanity, the glossy magazine produced by brand Citizens of Humanity. Throughout the interview, these tow icons share stories about their experiences at the top of the modelling game. Iman told Christy she hadn’t walked in a runway show since 1989, to which Christy admits she tries to avoid the spectacle. “It’s just not fun and you feel like you’re in a fishbowl,” she said of the process. Christy, who goes by the surname Turlington-Burns since her marriage to writer-director-actor Ed Burns in 20013, still works with brands, such as Calvin Klein. But she’s more likely to go for print as opposed to a fashion month dash across the world.

Now she focuses on stuff that is more important to her personally, and went back to college in 1994 to study philosophy.

“I thought about it for a long time, and I guess I really haven’t fully given modeling up, but in my mind I did, because I went back to school and moved on in my life. And when I went back to school, same thing,? she said. ?I remember somebody telling me that they were in a location van and they saw me walk by with my backpack, and they were like, ‘Oh, poor thing.’ And I’m thinking – ‘Poor thing? I’m getting my education, you fools.’ But I remember thinking about it. I think I had finally quit smoking and had gained some weight, and I was in Paris for the couture shows and I remember that moment when I thought, ‘You know what, I’m doing something healthy for myself, and they’re judging me and I don’t want to subject myself to it anymore.’ And it’s such an empowering feeling when you can make that choice. ”

In recent years, Turlington has been busy working as a humanitarian and activist, focusing on the issue of dangerous childbirth around the world. She has used her fame to raise funds and make documentaries for her non-profit Every Mother Counts.
