Stuck in a fashion rut? Here are 6 ways to get out of your comfort zone

Stuck in a fashion rut? Here are 6 ways to get out of your comfort zone

If you're stuck in a fashion rut, there's no need to go on a high street shopping spree — these tips on updating your wardrobe won't cost you (or the planet) anything.

‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ – for too long, I’ve taken that mantra as gospel when it comes to my daily approach to dressing.

I can hazard a guess that many of you are the same too. A mixture of pre-coffee panic, a quick scan to see what’s clean and looks comfortable tends to result in a week’s worth of Groundhog Day outfits for a lot of us.

If you’re going through the motions of feeling jaded by your own personal style, know that it’s likely just a rut. Sometimes it’s not a shopping spree that you need, but rather a fresh perspective. The garments and accessories in your repertoire did once inspire something, so remember that. Although, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results – so here’s how to mix up your day-to-day style and keep your sanity intact.

Host a swap shop

Enlist your friends, neighbours, family, and co-workers for a night of fashion swapping. One woman’s trash is another’s last-season must-have, as they (kind of) say.

Rid your closet of its skeletons

Figuratively speaking, of course. Commit to wearing at least one thing this week that has been lying dormant since you bought it and you might end up finding a new favourite piece in the process.

Up-cycle something

Whether it’s adding new buttons to a blazer, turning a maxi frock into a party-ready mini or adding rips to a pair of old jeans, there’s likely all sorts of potential hiding amid the chaos in your closet.

Have a friend or family member dress you for the day

Because that same mother who once scolded you for wearing inappropriate garments likely knows what suits you better than anyone else.

Break one fashion rule you always adhered to

The first rule of Fight Club fashion? There are no rules.

Buy something pre-loved

The quickest and most environmentally friendly way to add a dash of individuality to your look.
