With its avant-garde theme paying homage to Comme des Gar?ons designer Rei Kawakubo, the Met Gala’s red carpet was interesting this year if a little demure. High-profile events are often polarising, but when millions tune into an event so lavish, it can be easy to forget that it’s a strange and tough environment for those attending. They are dressed to the nines, no doubt wearing items that cost so much we won’t risk thinking about it, but then they are judged, endlessly critiqued with their every body part’dissected. It makes sense that so many would stick to something safe. In terms of fashion, many broke the mould, but when it came to beauty, 70% thought that only one look would do: a chic bob.

In homage to the great Rei Kawakubo’s infamous haircut, the carpet was a sea of bobs, pixie cuts and glittered, shaved heads (it’ll make sense when you see the gallery) but it was those who went for something a little daring and different that really shone. From an almost unrecognisable Lily Collins to Solange?Knowles’s utterly untamed mane of curls, here’s the best of Met Gala beauty.
