SS19 hair trends: here’s everything you need to know

Rosaleen McMeel gives her insight into the trends emerging from the catwalk for our tresses this summer. From curls to clips and plenty of spray, this is what you should look out for if you’re itching for a change in hair style.

Curl talk

The eighties called and they want their hair back. But if you’ve any sense (of style), you won’t comply. If Zimmerman’s brushed-out curls are anything to go by, a low-maintenance look will add instant glam to any event. Complement with red nails and classic black smokey eyes for the full retro flashback.

Love is in the hair

Alexa Chung has long been a fan of barrettes and regularly wears several at once. This season the humble hair clip is the accessory everyone wants to get their hands on, even more so if it comes with a message.

Once reserved for bridal hairstyles, ornate barrettes and statement hair grips are fashion’s way of nudging itself into beauty territory. Although many credit Holly Willoughby’s appearance on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! wearing three hair clips that read “jungle is massive” — a pop-culture wink to the reality show  – for the resurgence in popularity, fashion insiders have been advocating this trend for a while, and Ashley Williams’ SS19 show showcased it to perfection.

Avoid looking like you’re about to make your Communion by executing the look with aplomb. Use your hands to hold the hair down below the placement, so that they can easily slide in the hair without messing up the style. Use your facial features as a guide for placement, such as the eyebrow arch, edge of the eyebrow, eye, cheekbones, etc.
