My day in beauty: Thalia Heffernan on taming her unruly hair and her pared-back skin routine

My day in beauty: Thalia Heffernan on taming her unruly hair and her pared-back skin routine

Model and DSPCA ambassador Thalia Heffernan talks us through what she uses, why she uses it and how she tames her unruly (but gorgeous) locks…

IT ALL STARTS WITH A GOOD SCRUB

“To be honest, my day-to-day routine is incredibly straightforward,” says Thalia. “I have a morning shower, and afterwards when I’ve just used water on my face, I use Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser. Around three or four times a week I will follow with an exfoliant. I use a few different products, but I love the Yonka exfoliators for a really good scrub! If I haven’t enough time for this (those 4am starts!) I will use a cleansing gel from La Canopee which has charcoal, tea tree and lemon which really helps to wake the skin up.”

VEGAN GOODNESS

“Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser is my hero product, and has been for over seven years. It takes off makeup like a dream and the muslin cloth leaves your skin really clean and soft. Plus, it’s vegan friendly.”

THALIA’S TOP SKINCARE TIP

“I know it’s clichéd, but… water. My skin suffers the most when I’m travelling, which is a lot lately, and the dehydration caused by that. A good face cream when travelling is essential and also I like to have a travel-sized face cleanser too as I feel a quick face wash during long flights or trains works wonders. I also give my skin as much down time as possible from makeup. With my job I have no control of that, but on my days off I rarely ever even use concealer, I just try to let it breathe as much as possible.”

THALIA’S TOP MAKEUP TIP

“Like I said above, I try to give my skin a break as much as possible, so some lipstick and a good brow are my go-tos. I use Benefit brow pencils as they are so easy. I also need eyebrow gel as mine are beyond unruly, but my girl Kath Mulhall helps me with them too. Also, I love using lip balm (Eight Hour Cream or the likes) when I’ve no other skin makeup on, just on the top of my cheek bones for a really gorgeous dewy highlight. Just go easy as it can verge on greasy!”

TAMING THE UNRULY

“Philip Kingsley’s products are magic. That’s the only way I can describe them. They’re not exactly cheap but I do believe they’re worth the money. I have really fine but unruly hair and I use their deep condition products actually made for Afro-textured hair and it’s made my hair so much more manageable.”

THALIA’S TOP HAIR TIP

“With my hair undergoing some tough work with my job, I try to treat it every week, sometimes twice or three times depending on how busy I am. I use a deep conditioning mask and pull my hair back into a bun when it’s towel dry. I wear it like that all day (think ballerina bun) and it’s a perfect blend of sleek and smart.”
