Why Champagne May Be Your Skin’s New BFF

Why Champagne May Be Your Skin’s New BFF

Not that we needed another excuse to guzzle more bubbles but did you know there’s more to champagne than meets the eye? Well, as music to our grumpy Monday ears, there’s all kinds of beautifying properties within this glistening tipple, so feel free to crack open a bottle as part of your post-weekend pamper sesh, without feeling even the tiniest bit guilty. Hurrah!

Now, for the most part, you’ll find champagne included in many popular skin care products as an additional ingredient (particularly in some toners), but we reckon a glass or two can only help matters, right? After all, we’re always told that beauty starts on the inside. Thanks to the antioxidants in the grape seed extract that it contains, you’re getting skin-loving goodness that’s reportedly 20 to 50 times more potent than Vitamin C and E alone. As one of the most powerful natural skincare ingredients, you can consider grape seed extract to be your skin’s new BFF as the more it’s studied, the more benefits are said to be found, according to various studies. Sitting pretty in your glass of bubbly, this protects and boosts collagen and elastin; it combats against environmental free radicals and oxidative stress and is said to generally ease the skin’s aging process. What’s more, champagne’s packed full of tartaric acid, which lightens skin, improves discolouration and even helps to battle those blemishes. The presence of ‘polyphenols'(plant chemicals with antioxidant properties) are also said to have redness-reducing effects, while the carbon dioxide helps to tighten your skin.

If you’re still not convinced of the powers of sparkling wine (and let us stress that just a glass will do; excess alcohol consumption brings on a whole host of problems and you should always drink responsibly), we’ve also done some digging around and discovered that according to a study from the University of England, champagne and other sparkling wines can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke because of the aforementioned polyphenols that help to lower your blood pressure. Sip on a glass once a week to reap the benefits, says lead researcher on the study, Jeremy Spencer, Ph.D.

Now, who’s for a celebratory toast?
