We’re awarding our own Oscars, for Best Hair (Amandla Stenberg with Regina King as a fierce runner up), Best Red lipstick (Constance Wu, no question) and Best Lob (almost too many to mention). And the winner is…

Amandla Stenberg’s single plaited cornrow fingerwaves woven into a bun by Vernon Francois stole the show at her first Oscars. According to Francois, her hair was an ode to her Miu Miu flapper metallic crystal chain-tiered gown. “We wanted to bring out the glamour and sophistication of the 1920s, but also pay homage to tradition with her texture,” says Francois on Instagram. “But when I was researching braids in that sort of [finger-waved shape], I couldn’t find any. So we were on a mission to create it.”

Laura Harrier’s Lous Vuitton gown may be in all the best-dressed lists today but it was her pastel blue eyes – Chanel Ombre Premiere Longwear Powder Eyeshadow in “54-Nuage Bleu”, FYI – artfully applied by Hung Vanngo that really shined.

With Gemma Chan and Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett led the charge of the pretty-in-pink dress brigade at the Oscars, but her hair deserved an award of it’s own, with a business-at-the-front middle parting and a whole party-at-the-back crimped, voluminous long ponytail. Her long-wearing berry lipstick has been the subject of much online debate today, which her make-up artist D’Andre Michael has confirmed was a mix of MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick in Velvet Punch and Reverence. “I wanted to compliment the dress and not match it, and I never really do a dark lip on her so I thought, ‘Let’s do dark today,'” he said.

Charlize Theron wore her cornflower backless dress with a new brown bob – if pink dresses were the the biggest fashion trend of the Oscars, in beauty, it was the brunette bob – by celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel and colorist Tracey Cunningham. Adir Abergel says, “hair is your greatest accessory! Changing your hair is best way to transform yourself. And, why not?” Unless you’re going through some big life changes, in which case, before you reach for the bleach or bangs, consult your friends or at least your mother first.

Gaga’s BDE (that’s big diamond energy) and platinum blonde Hepburn hair ought not be outshined by her fresh shin and matte grey eyeliner by make-up artist Sarah Nicole Tanno. On Instagram, Sarah gives a full breakdown of how she created the look and says, “Lady Gaga’s Oscars makeup was all about being soft, fresh and young. We didn’t want anything to distract from this special moment.”

Hair dressing is a trend that’s not going away, whether it’s a pearl barrette or a full sparkling headband. Rachel Weisz’s headband was crafted from vintage Cartier diamond and brooches from 1903, transformed for the first time in over 100 years into a headband and sewn into Rachel’s hair. Stylist Kate Young was given the opportunity to choose pieces from the Cartier museum to create a look of her choice. “I love the modernity and romance of them on her head,” she said.
