This utterly adorable Donegal thatched cottage is on the market for €159,950

With an almost impossibly picturesque exterior and set within a serene coastal area, it could almost be lifted straight out of a story book.

Donegal is always a favourite location amongst Irish people – perhaps it’s because of how many of us spent childhood holidays there, or how beautiful and untouched its vast coastline is.

Whatever the reason, plenty of people dream of having a Donegal cottage to retreat to, and this one would certainly tick a lot of boxes. Its bright white walls, contrasted with red doors and window sills, surrounded by a stone wall and with a thatched roof, it looks adorable and cheerful in equal measure.

A one-bedroom home situated in the peaceful area of Meenagowan, it has views of the surrounding countryside, and it near the Gweebarra River as it heads out to sea. It’s just a 10 minute drive from the spectacular Blue Flag Dooey beach, with plenty of other beaches nearby.

Many of the original features of this cottage remain intact, and it still has the traditional layout. You enter the house into the living and dining space, which has a slate floor, vaulted ceiling and an open fireplace.

To the right of this space is the bathroom, and a galley kitchen with a tiled backsplash and open shelving. The bedroom, to the other side of the living space, is well sized, while the vaulted ceiling throughout helps everything feel spacious.

There is potential for some modernisation, although undoubtedly the appeal of this home is its unmistakable charm, and so any potential new owner would want to tread carefully in order to not to lose this.

Outside, there is a large shed that can be used for storage, while the garden is well-maintained.
