From iconic Riojas to zesty Albariños and celebration-ready Cava, SuperValu invites Irish wine lovers on a journey through Spain’s most exciting wine regions this February.

Spain has officially stolen Ireland’s heart, and it’s not just because it is one of our favourite holiday destinations. No, the wine is pretty good too, and we love it.

Once known mainly for dependable reds, Spanish wines are now the number one choice in the Irish red wine category, and the devotion shows no sign of being broken. This February, SuperValu is celebrating that passion with the return of its Spanish Wine Sale, running in-stores nationwide and online from February 5-24, offering standout savings on a carefully curated selection of exceptional wines from the Spanish region.

Hand-picked by Kevin O’Callaghan, SuperValu’s wine expert and chief buyer, the range reflects how Irish wine drinkers are evolving: being more discerning in their choice and exploring beyond the familiar without sacrificing value or quality.

In numbers, Rioja accounts for over 40% of all Spanish wine purchases. However, while it remains the trusted favourite, shoppers are increasingly trading up to Reserva styles, branching out into premium whites like Albariño, and popping corks on sparkling Cava for everyday celebrations.

“Spain is home to some of the most exciting and diverse wines in the world, and Irish consumers are responding in a big way,” says Kevin O’Callaghan. “Rioja remains the star performer, but what’s really exciting is the growth in sparkling Cava and premium whites. Shoppers are broadening their horizons and trading up for quality, and this sale is all about giving them access to that diversity and value.”

What to pour

This year’s Spanish Wine Sale mirrors the trends shaping Irish wine choices with something to suit every palate and plate.

The icons

Reliable, rich and endlessly food-friendly, Rioja continues to set the benchmark. Look out for Pagos de Labarca AEX (€15, was €25) and Pata Negra Reserva (€10, was €14). These are smooth, spice-kissed reds that are tailor-made for comforting dishes.

The whites

Spain’s white wines are having a moment. Abellio Albariño (€12, was €17) from Rías Baixas delivers aromatic peach notes with a mineral edge and sits perfectly with seafood. Verdejo is also gaining fans, thanks to its crisp, zesty freshness. This year’s guest wine, Viña Albali Verdejo DO Valdepeñas (€8), offers melon and peach flavours with a beautifully balanced mouthfeel.

The bubbles

Sparkling wine demand continues to soar, and Gran Troya Cava Brut (€12.99, was €26) is a standout. Made using the traditional method, it delivers Champagne-style elegance at a fraction of the cost.

The discoveries

For those eager to explore, Spain’s emerging regions deliver depth, character and exceptional value. Mosaic Priorat (€16, was €19.99) offers complexity at a rare price point, while Flor de Anón Orgánico (€10, was €13) and La Maldita Rioja Garnacha (€10, was €15) are vibrant, approachable reds ideal for tapas nights and relaxed dining.

Whether you’re planning a special meal, refreshing your wine rack, or simply looking for a new favourite bottle, SuperValu’s Spanish Wine Sale 2026 offers the perfect excuse to explore the best of Spain glass by glass. The Spanish Wine Sale runs in-stores nationwide and online at supervalu.ie from February 5-24.
