Lindsay Lohan’s Super Bowl Sunday ad shows she’s actually the best sport of all

Between the halftime show, Bennifer’s pre-Valentine’s Day sports date, and this Lindsay Lohan ad, it’s clear that the Super Bowl was peak noughties nostalgia this year.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: the noughties are back. From fashion to beauty to music, anything that ruled supreme from 2000 to 2009 has slowly seeped its way back into popular culture.

Some trends we can get on board with. Matching velour tracksuits, for example. Lockdown may be over, but our penchant for comfort dressing lives on. Other fads, we’re less enthused about; low rise jeans, frosted blue eyeshadow (a slightly more ethereal take on the conjunctivitis look), huge oversized belts, to name but a few. Hell, even Ugg boots are supposedly cool again? Thanks, Cher.

Noughties style may be the first thing most people think of when they put their rose-tinted glasses on, but Lindsay Lohan is a close second. One of the biggest teen idols of that time – along with Hilary Duff and Amanda Bynes – she dominated just about every movie we loved back then, and thankfully, the noughties nostalgia has brought her along for the ride too.

Already confirming that she’ll be making her long-awaited return to acting courtesy of a new festive rom-com, the majority of fans had her comeback set for later this year… but looks like she was keen to get started and ended up surprising everyone with a special Super Bowl appearance.

The star of the new Planet Fitness ad, Lohan proved that she definitely doesn’t take herself too seriously and used the opportunity to poke some fun at her “partying past”.

For anyone who has yet to see the clip, it opens with a closeup of the actress on the treadmill. “People are wondering what’s gotten into Lindsay?”, the narrator booms (along with a chorus of other gym-goers). “She’s never been sharper,” the voice continues before showing Lohan competing against Dennis Rodman in a game of Jeopardy!.

“She’s sleeping better than ever, which the paparazzi aren’t thrilled about. She’s even more productive, trading DUIs for DIY… maybe it’s not what’s gotten into Linds, it’s what Linds has gotten into,” William Shatner concludes before the Mean Girls star struts out of Planet Fitness, positively glowing after her workout.

Speaking to Good Morning America about the ad, Lohan said that she was “really involved” in coming up with the creative idea behind the idea. “I was really involved in the concept, and you have to poke fun at things, bring light to the situation. Especially because I’m in such a good place to talk about it. This is the final time we’ll go backwards,” she laughed.

As for the halftime show? Even non-sports fans know that the Super Bowl musical performance is always epic and the 2022 edition definitely didn’t fall short with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige all taking to the stage for the occasion. A true trip down memory lane, the whole thing had us right back in our Slim Shady era and “Lose Yourself” will be on repeat all day. Also, can we walk about Mary J’s sequin thigh highs? Where can we get our hands on a pair of those?
