Irish farm stays: a treetop dome at Fernwood Farm, Connemara

Irish farm stays: a treetop dome at Fernwood Farm, Connemara

This unique stay is the ultimate in simple luxuries, with utter tranquility.

When planning a short break, we would love to experiment but are afraid to risk our precious time. To enjoy the creature comforts yet be secluded in the wilds. To feel fully removed, yet safely connected.

At Fernwood, Simon and Anne Ashe have achieved this delicate balance. Their farm retreat on the edge of Clifden town, surrounded by native woodland, bog, rushing rivers and a salt lake, is an authentic yet luxurious experience with a wonderful sense of off-grid peace and tranquillity.

Snuggling into super-comfy beds in front of a wood-burning stove while seemingly floating among the trees in Fernwood’s geodome is to enter a state of quiet contentment.

The only sound is the wind in the trees, the rushing water of the stream and a chorus of birdsong. Within walking distance of Clifden, there is also a cycle greenway at their gate, the Twelve Bens to hike and countless pristine beaches to explore, if you ever want to leave this little haven.

Fernwood Farm is a considered and slowly nurtured endeavour in step with nature. They recently opened a lakeshore sauna and new rope bridge spanning the river and connecting wooded paths to the bog lands.

Later this summer they will launch their new ultra-modern pod, adding to the geodome and studio offering yet maintaining the low impact and sense of seclusion.

Their certified organic garden, massive planting of native trees, herd of tiny Dexter cattle, flock of hens and resident donkeys plus a healthy host of wildlife, are all testament to Anne and Simon’s hard work and holistic approach.

Fernwood has all you need and nothing you don’t.

Where to eat nearby The Fadó Pizza truck, which is currently onsite at weekends with extended opening during the summer season, does incredible pizza. Guy’s pub on Main Street, Clifden has really great bar food, while Leenane’s Misunderstood Heron food truck on the Killary fjord is always worth the drive.

What to bring Fernwood think of everything from bug spray to Bang & Olufsen speakers and torches. But remember to bring swimming togs for the new sauna, hiking boots and rain gear.

A one-night stay starts from €130.
