Ireland’s most popular pizza toppings have been revealed and we have questions
27th Jun 2021
What kind of monster puts pineapple on a pizza anyway?
When it comes to ordering a Friday night takeaway, there is nothing quite as dependable as a pizza. Most people love it, it’s easy to share and you can never go wrong with pepperoni, right?
Wrong.
In some surprising news this week, Domino’s released its top ten most popular pizza toppings, and they’re not all quite what we were expecting.
Here’s the full list:
- Pepperoni
- Ham
- Roast Chicken
- Sweetcorn
- Onions
- Bacon
- Green and Red Peppers
- Mushrooms
- Tandoori Chicken
- Jalapeños
While the top three we’re more predictable – pepperoni, ham and roast chicken – and show that meat lovers still dominate the pizza space, the other favourite toppings were less so.
Sweetcorn, onions, jalapeños and tandoori chicken were all listed in the top ten, so let’s unpack that.
Sweetcorn and pineapple
First of all, I can’t seem to find myself jumping on the sweetcorn wagon. Sweet and savoury have never been a pleasant mix when it comes to pizza, which is why I usually wouldn’t trust people who order pineapple on their cheesy pies.
And it turns out, I’m not alone. This TikTok of a woman asking her Italian partner to request pineapple on their pizza recently went viral.
@carloandsarahCarlo has had it with me?? original sound – Carlo and Sarah
He tells her that if he orders pineapple, he will literally have to move to another place – some things are just too sacred, I guess.
Now, don’t get me wrong; I’ve nothing against people who enjoy a sweet and savoury combo on their pies – my best friend orders pineapple on her pizza regularly. I just can’t understand how she likes the flavour, but as the food mantra goes – to each their own.
Curry meets pizza
We can attribute onions and jalapenos to people who like their pizza spicy, but tandoori chicken was a bit of a shock when I read the toppings list. I had never thought of melding Indian with Italian cuisine.
Even as I picture it, I can’t quite imagine how a tandoori pizza would taste, but it must be good if people are ordering it, right?
(If this is a regular dish for you, please reply how it tastes in the comments so that we can know!)
Overall, it’s clear that we all have a wide range of takeaway tastes, and if you’re not craving pizza by the end of this, then you must have supernatural willpower.
In fact, I think I’ll just open a new tab here and order a Pepperoni Passion for myself… it’s been a long work week after all.
To get your hands on all these deliciously fresh and tasty ingredients at a great price, Domino’s is now offering The Tasty Mix, feeding four for just €6 each. The Tasty Mix deal is available nationwide and includes one large pizza, a chicken combo and one sumptuous side – all for €24.
