How to curate your wine rack like a pro

by Michelle Lawlor

Michelle Lawlor, founder of The Nude Wine Co, shares how to curate your wine rack like a pro and the essential bottles to have at home.

Ever dreamed of having your wine rack filled with your dream of collection of wines so you can have the perfect wine ready for wine o’clock on a Friday or that special occasion meal to mark a big milestone? Creating your perfect wine rack collection, no matter how many spaces you have in it, is a really fun project that can give you joy both in the immediate future and for years to come.

The most fun thing about having a full wine rack is choosing which wine to drink. When you have your wine rack stocked, its like having your own personal wine shop where you get to chose pick and chose your perfect wine for the occasion.

Let me take you through a stylish collection idea that’s designed to impress, featuring both iconic names and hidden gems. Whether you’re planning a midweek dinner, a relaxed weekend, or a special celebration, there’s a wine here for you.

There are 3 types of wine you need for a dream wine collection; wines for everyday, wines for special occasions and wines to keep for a milestone event, or even an experiment!

Hidden Gems

For those who love discovering new and exciting wines, my collection includes some hidden gems. Opening up one of these for yourself or when you have guests around creates a fun talking point and allows you to show off your wine knowledge. These wines can make great everyday wines, or try a premium version for that special occasion.

Whites Wines

Vermentino: A delightful white from the Med offering fresh and vibrant flavours. Excellent with light fish dishes or a Mediterranean salad. This is perfect for people who love an Albarino. Try: Rocher de la Republique, Languedoc-Roussillon, €16.75.

Godello: This Spanish white balances acidity with rich fruit notes, perfect for those seeking something unique. Enjoy with shellfish or chicken dishes. If you like wines such as Macon, this is a great alternative for you. Try: Via Arxentea Bianco, Monterrei, €19.99.

Reds Wines

Priorat: This bold and intense Spanish red is a must-try. Pair it with grilled meats or robust stews. Made from Garnacha, the same grape as Chateauneuf du Pape, this is impressively delicious. Try: Portal del Priorat Gotes 2021, €29.50.

Valpolicella Ripasso: Often called a baby Amarone, it has all the oomph of an Amarone with half the price tag. We love this, and it pairs so well with wintry dishes like stew and Goulash. Try: Torre del Falasco Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso 2020, €19.50.

Iconic Names

This selection includes some of the most celebrated wines that will create a wow factor every time they are opened. These wines are all associated with the aspirational end of the wine list. You don’t need all of them in your wine rack, but having one or two at least is a great place to start. These wines will be perfect to mark a significant milestone and all have great ageing potential, but can also be drunk young.

Chateauneuf du Pape: A rich, full-bodied red that’s a showstopper at any dinner party. Try it with a hearty lamb stew for an unforgettable meal.
Barolo: Known as the “King of Wines,” this Italian classic boasts complex flavours and incredible aging potential. Perfect with truffle dishes or game meats.
Rioja Gran Reserva: Spanish excellence with a harmonious blend of aged flavours. Ideal with lamb chops or a mature cheese platter.
Champagne: The ultimate celebratory drink, synonymous with luxury. Enjoy it with smoked salmon or pop for Sunday brunch.
Sancerre: Crisp and refreshing, ideal for lighter meals. Perfect with seafood or goat cheese salad.
Chablis: A refined white wine with a distinctive mineral character. Pairs wonderfully with grilled fish or creamy pasta dishes.
Puligny Montrachet: A prestigious Burgundy white, known for its depth and complexity. Serve with lobster or rich poultry dishes.

By following these top tips, you can ensure your wine collection remains in top condition, ready to impress on any occasion. Most importantly, keep your wine rack well stocked… you don’t want to run out!
