Jo Linehan breaks down how climate-related issues are affecting us, and what we can do to be part of the solution.
There is an endless list of climate-related buzzwords and jargon that our brains have become accustomed to over the last decade. We hear these terms on the radio and in the news: carbon footprint, net zero, renewables, the energy transition. It can be challenging to understand how these topics relate to us, as Irish and global citizens.
In this explainer, I’ll break down how these topics affect us, impact our lives, and explore how we can be part of the climate solution in practical, no-nonsense ways. Let’s start with the energy transition. I’ve recruited Philip Connor, Head of Energy Services at Pinergy, to share his insights and tips on what the energy transition means for us.
The energy transition, defined
Put simply, the energy transition describes the shift taking place in society today from the use, production, and consumption of traditional energy sources, such as fossil fuels, to renewable energy sources like wind, solar, wave, and HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil).
The burning of fossil fuels is one of the main contributors to climate change. If we can transition from fossil fuel energy resources to renewable energy resources, we can reduce emissions, which in turn can help us slow down and even reverse the impacts of climate change.
“The energy transition has been taking place mainly over the last 10-15 years, primarily due to the development of technology and the widespread production of wind turbines, among other factors,” Philip explains. “This transition isn’t easy – we are dealing with legacy issues, market structure problems, among other challenges. A lot of work has been done, but there is still much to be done to transition our energy in Ireland. It’s a journey.”
Where are we on the journey?
Ireland’s Climate Action Plan has set a target of a 51% reduction in emissions by 2030. However, we are currently on track to reduce emissions by just 35% by 2030. So, while progress is being made, Ireland needs to accelerate its action to make greater progress.
Philip says that we have the talent and technology to increase action. “To get back on track, we need to upgrade the systems that will support this transition, including upgrading our national grid infrastructure and energy storage capabilities.
“We also need to remove barriers to continued electric vehicle adoption, and we need to enhance the support available for energy upgrades like heat pumps and building electrification.”
What are the benefits of the energy transition?
The energy transition may sound like an uphill battle, but it offers us a swathe of benefits. Clean energy sources, such as wind and solar, mean cleaner air and water, as well as quieter towns and cities. The more we switch out fossil fuels for renewable alternatives, the better quality of life we will all enjoy day-to-day.
Next, there’s energy security. Ireland has the potential not only to generate enough renewable energy to power its entire island but also to export excess energy to other nations. That will mean a fairer price for our energy and a supply we can depend on.
“The energy transition affects everything,” Philip shares. “Transitioning to a renewable energy future means lowering the cost of our energy bills, ensuring Ireland’s economic independence, and building for the future. It will also ensure we have access to cheaper, more resilient energy.”
What can we do as individuals and businesses to get on board?
The energy transition is in each of our hands. By making changes to the energy we use, we can accelerate our pathway to all of the benefits this transformation has to offer.
“Switching to 100% renewable electricity is the easiest first touch point for consumers to start their journey,” Philip shares. “Pinergy aims to lead Ireland’s energy transition by delivering electricity to customers from renewable sources, including wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. Plus, thanks to the Pinergy app, you can track and trace your energy use, which means less wasted energy in your home and bills that are easier to manage and reduce.”
Retrofitting your home or business is key. By making every building in Ireland as energy-efficient as possible, we can reduce energy waste and lower our energy costs. Another great step to take is to generate your own energy. Homeowners with solar systems can reduce their electricity bills by 50% each year, resulting in savings of up to €20,000 or more over 20 years. Pinergy is the solar PV expert, so if you’re considering making the move, chat with our team.
“My advice is to become curious about your energy use, and go from there,” Philip says. “There’s a quote I love that says, ‘You can’t electrify chaos – efficiency comes first’.”

Businesses can lead
Irish businesses also play a crucial role in Ireland’s energy transition. For Philp and his team, the businesses that make the energy transition now will reap the rewards.
“Making the transition goes beyond sustainability now; transitioning to renewable energy for businesses is about efficiency, competitiveness, and future-proofing. Customers are looking for that option, and regulators are shifting that way too. We see it with commercial customers looking for stability. Pinergy is an energy supplier, but we also want to be a long-term energy partner, supporting everyone to make the energy transition in an efficient, cost-effective and transparent way.”
Why stay optimistic?
It can be easy to feel discouraged about how far we still have to go to reach our energy targets. But, Philip says, we are making progress, and every single person has the power to help move the dial in the right direction.
“I see the momentum every day,” Philip says. “At Pinergy, the team and I see families switching to renewable energy, taking back power over their usage and installing solar panels. We see businesses continuing to commit to net-zero or a broader decarbonization plan. The will and the innovation are there. We have the resources and the talent to lean in the right direction. Everyone who joins us on the journey helps us to take one step closer to a brighter future.”
