3 unusual period properties for sale in Ireland for under €200,000

3 unusual period properties for sale in Ireland for under €200,000

An old church ripe for a reimagining, a gingerbread house in Cork that needs work and a gate lodge in Galway that's ready to move into, these period properties are looking for new owners.

It’s not as easy to find beautiful period properties in Ireland as it is in the UK or further afield. Unfortunately, we did not have the architectural history (or the historic wealth) to build many fine homes in the past. Either it’s a crumbly famine cottage (not without its charms) or a ludicrously priced Georgian terrace with a basement cinema and outdoor pool (also lovely, but it’s a niche market).

However, if you keep your eye out (or have professional like ourselves trawling Daft every day) you can spot some absolute gems. These three have oodles of potential and are all at different stages of the restoration process, so you can decide what suits you.

Church Hill, Jonesborough, Co Armagh
€104.099

This former Church of Ireland church is yet to be converted and in need of someone with an eye for design. It is located right on the border of Armagh and Louth, halfway between Dundalk and Newry.

It has so much potential as a spectacular period home, nestled amongst mature trees. Situated at the end of a quiet cul de sac, it’s a few minutes from the N1/A1 and just over the scenic rolling hills is Carlingford Lough.

However, the building does not come with planning permission to convert, so you will have to go through that process after the sale.

Station Road, Athenry, Co Galway
€195,000

This stunning old gatekeeper’s lodge in the heart of Athenry town has been beautifully restored in a shabby chic style, so you could move right in.

The two-bedroom home was built about 1840 and retains a number of its original features, from the curved windows and stone masonry to the old-fashioned Beetonette solid-fuel range in the kitchen.

The property also has private off-road parking for two cars and a separate storage yard and sheds.

Derry Lodge, Rosscarbery, Co Cork
€80,000

This one needs a little bit more imagination. Located in the heart of Rosscarbery town in West Cork,  it’s another charming stone-built gate lodge, so let the Athenry property be your inspiration.

The current owners have already done some work on the restoration, reroofing it and working on the exterior stonework and windows. However, with the right eye and plenty of patience, it has the potential to be the most gorgeous little gingerbread house.
