Take a Brelfie this weekend to celebrate National Breastfeeding Week

Take a Brelfie this weekend to celebrate National Breastfeeding Week

This year’s National Breastfeeding Week focuses on supporting new mothers who have felt isolated during the pandemic

Today marks the beginning of National Breastfeeding Week, and breastfeeding support group Friends of Breastfeeding have a great plan to celebrate virtually.

This Saturday 3rd of October will see Ireland’s first Brelfie Day, where Friends of Breastfeeding are asking mums to post a breastfeeding selfie to encourage and support other mothers around the country.

During the pandemic, many new mothers around Ireland have felt isolated or unsupported when it comes to issues like breastfeeding. While breastfeeding is a natural process, many women can find it difficult, painful, frustrating and even embarrassing, due to the stigma that still exists around feeding.

According to Friends of Breastfeeding, Brelfie Day 2020 will encourage mothers to celebrate their own achievements and those of their ‘breast friends’, as well creating an online community that can build confidence and empower mothers to overcome breastfeeding challenges.

You can post your recent Brelfie, or even one that’s not so recent, to social media, using the hashtag #brelfie2020.

Jennifer Phillips, Chairperson of Friends of Breastfeeding said “There’ll be newborn ‘look at that contented face’ brelfies; ouchie soothing brelfies; alfresco forest and beach brelfies; as well as dressed up ‘who’d have thought I could feed in this’ brelfies, alongside dirty hair and stained PJs brelfies.  All beautiful. All normal. All celebrated”.
