Greta Thunberg returns to school after year off fighting for climate action

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has returned to school after her gap year fighting for climate action across the globe

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg has announced she has returned to school after a year off campaigning for climate action.

In a Twitter post, she said: “My gap year from school is over, and it feels so great to finally be back in school again!” The tweet also includes a photo of the 17-year-old riding a bike with her schoolbag in tow.

The Sweden native made headlines across the world as she travelled across the Atlantic ocean by sailing boat. Her trip began in August 2019 and thus became the beginning of her gap year.

While in North America, she met former US President Barack Obama and addressed the United Nations Climate Action Summit where she delivered her now-infamous speech.

“I shouldn’t be up here”, she said. “I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you. You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”

Following this, she led a rally in Montreal as part of the Global Climate Strike. It is reported that around 315,000 people attended the march, which saw similar protests take place across the world.

In January of this year, she faced some of the world’s most powerful leaders (including Donald Trump) at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

And in March, she spoke to the European Parliament’s Environment Committee where she openly criticised the EU’s approach to climate change.
