Next Generation Crafts

If you’re anywhere near Kilkenny, get down to the graduate exhibition of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s (DCCoI) Ceramics Skills & Design Course at the National Craft Gallery. The exhibit, Up From Earth, was officially opened this weekend by the inspirational Jack Doherty, lead potter and creative director at The Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall. Featuring work by 11 students who just undertook an intensive, two-year programme at the beautiful Island Mill in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, the exhibition is a stunning showcase of ceramic pieces by the next generation of Irish craftspeople. The students? daily access to a wide range of firing techniques and types of clay helps each one develop a confidence over the material, the craft and their individual creative vision. Take note of the detail and fluidity of brushwork in Karen Cody’s work, and the tactile surface detail of Edward Brennan’s pieces, which he achieves largely through the firing processes as well as the distinct contrast of clay and glaze. Prepare to be inspired!

Up From Earth will run until Sunday August 3. Prices range from €20??400. A ?Meet the Makers? late-date event will take place in the National Craft Gallery this Thursday, July 24, at 6.30pm, where the graduates will present their work and explain their process and inspiration for their selected pieces.
