House Tour Belfast

Concealed behind traditional red brick, against the busy backdrop of Belfast's city centre, Jane McSherry's period home is bursting with personality. Each room is distinctive - a veritable master class in mixing a period property with contemporary design and retro furniture.

As soon as interior designer Jane clapped eyes on the Victorian townhouse it felt like home. Minutes from the city and opposite a park, it was everything she had been searching for.? ?I grew up in a 1970s bungalow and always hankered after a period home,? she enthuses. ?Like Dublin, Belfast has stacks of choice in the period property front and much of it is very accessible.?

Jane set out to make the most of the original features of the house while injecting her own personality into the space. ?The first thing I did to enliven the space was to add in a high-gloss white kitchen on the ground floor, which immediately brightened things up.?

With an interesting mix of auction house finds such as mirrored wooden doors, mid-century modern furniture and splashes of bright colour, today Jane's home feels vibrant and contemporary. ?You need to work with pieces that complement the Victorian space,? continues Jane, ?but my rule is if you see it and you like it, buy it and then make it fit into the room. I don't work the other way around.?
