Trending: the polo neck-necklace combo is the chicest 2020 wardrobe update

Looking to update your polo necks during these dark January days? A simple necklace will do the trick

While we trudge our way through January, our knitwear becomes our armour.

Protecting us from the cold, those nasty blues and anything else the beginning of the year wants to throw at us. From chunky to fine knits, to Aran sweaters and even cardigans, there is a multitude of options to choose from when it comes to our daily outfit dilemmas.

A classic polo neck jumper will never go out of style. A thin style provides a beautiful touch of Parisian chic while a thicker design will keep you warm on even the chilliest days.

However, the polo neck provides a whole lot of neck and not a lot of fashion action. Simple is lovely but adding a little extra makes something that was once plain altogether unique. We aren't talking feathers, spikes or rainbow sequins – just a necklace will suffice. Though it sounds straightforward it can be quite a difficult styling situation.

There is a fine line between modern and dated and this combo does an Irish jig between both.

Gold will always work, whether it comes in the form of fine jewellery or not. You may think pearls are from a bygone era but look for an update on the traditional necklace like Daphine's Pia Pearl necklace. Don't be afraid of a choker or chunky necklace, once the knit is fine the look will be streamlined. Finally, avoid long pendant styles. They bring the focus of the outfit downwards and make the look seem old-fashioned.

How to wear

Leandra Medine, the founder of Man Repeller, is a polo neck fiend. Her style is made of random combinations which always work and she is an expert at wearing necklaces with a good roll neck knit.

If you aren't into peacocking with your accessories, a simple diamante necklace such as this one here is a subtle way to add some sparkle to a plain black polo.

If you prefer edgy accessories, a chunky gold necklace paired with your polo neck adds a street-style feel.

This sheer polo neck doesn't look like much on its own but this abstract modernist necklace elevates it to high-fashion status.

Leandra is an expert at layering clothes and she shows the same competence for jewellery. Wear two to three with your knit for an eclectic and effective look. The key is to keep colourways similar and vary the length of each necklace.
