Keep it classic: 14 timeless capsule pieces to buy in the Christmas sales

Christmas sales can be tempting but it’s best to stick to good classics that will last – here are 14 timeless pieces to buy this year

We all love a good bargain. Who wouldn’t be tempted by slashed prices and big signs? Even Jesus himself wouldn’t turn a blind eye to a Zara sale.

However, with bargains come drabs. We tend to be led by the prices rather than the cost-per-wear ratio. This Christmas, it’s best to stick to good classics that will last. Capsule wardrobes are often spoken of in fashion circles, and the idea behind them is solid. Buy a good base of 10 to 15 pieces and then add trends where you see fit.

Like all good things they come with a caveat; they have a tendency to be boring. For the minimalist, it is heaven on earth – but for the maximalist it is hell.

I believe a good capsule wardrobe should have a mix. Yes, you need those basics. A good shirt, trousers and coat are the best employees you will ever have but don’t be afraid of colour or prints. Leopardprint is now observed as somewhat of a staple. Its colours go with just about everything and the ASOS tea dress below will be an ideal capsule dress to take you from casual wear to events. The same goes for polka dots. Stick to a mix of solid colours such as navy and red for maximum wearability.

Choose good denim, a suit, sturdy but sexy heels and ankle boots in the sales this year and you are ready to take on the world.

Trust me.
