What’s all this with Dominic West then?

What’s all this with Dominic West then?

Dominic West, Lily James, the photographs, the note; let us give it to you quick

Who?

Dominic West, 50, an actor best known for The Wire and The Affair (ahem). Lily James, 31, best known for Cinderella and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

What?

Dominic West, who is married to Irish landscape designer and aristocrat Catherine FitzGerald for ten years, was photographed kissing and riding on a scooter with Lily James whose split with The Crown star Matt Smith was just announced last week, but she was also rumoured to have been seeing The Avengers star Chris Evans (yeah, your man who leaked his own nudes on his Instagram). Dominic West and Lily James have been filming the tv show The Pursuit of Love together, where he plays her dad (gah).

Where?

In a cafe and on a scooter in Rome, looking like a bad 90s rom-com.

When?

Just 24 hours before Dominic West and Catherine FitzGerald stepped outside their homes to be photographed kissing by paparazzi, like a pair of disobedient politicians. West appeared outside his home with all the confidence of Emily in Paris showing up to her first day of work in a shirt with the Eiffel Tower on it, and the pair handed out notes to the waiting photographers that said;  “Our marriage is strong and we’re very much still together.”

Why do we care?

Well, first of all, his wife is Irish, so that gives us the right to care straight off the bat. Also, she seems very nice, and they have four children and have been married for ten years, so there’s that, too. Unfortunately, as part of his press tours for The Affair, there’s a ton of interviews that have resurfaced of Dominic West’s opinions on cheating on your spouse, all of them saying along the lines of what he said in an interview with the Evening Standard; “Everyone should turn a blind eye to men’s behaviour between the ages of 40 and 50.” Thirdly, it has not escaped social media fans that Dominic West does not appear to have changed his clothes. Finally, the note. What is only more deranged than appearing outside your front door to kiss for photographers, is the handwritten note they handed out. How did that work? Did they sit down that morning and write them all out? Did they organise for them to be brought to the photocopiers? It is the minutiae of all this that has captured everyone’s attention. It could also have something to do with wanting a break from the poison of the current news cycle with a story that doesn’t give you an existential crisis.
