No. 3 Glanmore Castle is the centrepiece of the original castle built in 1760, forming a tower house like accommodation over four floors.

Glanmore Castle, Castle of the Great Glen, was originally built in 1760 and was the Synge’s family seat. The family of renowned playwright and poet, John Millington Synge is best known for works such as The Playboy of the Western World and In the Shadow of the Glen. Seamus Heaney lived on the old estate at Glanmore and immortalised the area in the Glanmore Sonnets.

In 1804, Ireland’s premier architect Francis Johnston was commissioned to transform the original house into a castellated residence by adding turrets and a castellated parapet. Johnston is perhaps best known as the architect of the GPO in the centre of O’Connell Street and for Nelson’s Pillar.

In more recent years, Glanmore Castle was tastefully subdivided into four separate homes offering total privacy. Seamlessly set amidst the dramatic landscape of The Devil’s Glen, with over 200 acres of magical woodland land trails, river walks and a spectacular waterfall, Glanmore Castle is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream and a best of both worlds proposition being only 45 minutes drive from Dublin City Centre.

No. 3 Glanmore Castle is the centrepiece of the original castle forming a tower house like accommodation over four floors that has been cared for and upgraded by its current owners providing a wonderful balance of light filled accommodation. The property extends to approximately 185.5 sq.m. / 2,000 sq.ft. and features a stunning castellated roof top terrace with jaw dropping views over the woodland, valley and Carrack Mountain.

The accommodation briefly comprises an entrance hall with exposed wooden roof beams and a deep casement window, which opens into an inner hall with guest w/c and staircase accessing all floors.

The former library, now a magnificent drawing room with original fireplace, ceiling rose and stunning bay window, floods with natural light with the dramatic Devil’s glen and private garden as a backdrop.

Below at garden level, a wonderful, timbered baronial style, east facing kitchen/dining room is generously proportioned with feature double doors accessing the gardens and includes additional storage and pantry under arch.

On the first floor an extremely generous master bedroom with ensuite occupies the entire floor with an east facing bay of picture windows. On the second floor are three further bedrooms, two of which are double bedrooms and one a single currently being used as a home office and all three share a well appointed family bathroom.

Last but by no means least, continuing up the stairs, a door at the top of the Castle accesses a truly unique rooftop castle terrace with unrivalled panoramic countryside views.

Outside, the private well is located at the front of the castle and private car parking is provided for 3 cars. This area is private and bordered by tall pyracantha, Griselinia and leylandii hedging as well as some choice specimen trees and shrubs.

To the rear of the castle, a private garden offering exclusive entry to the Glen and river, is sheltered on either side with mature trees and shrubs and blends effortlessly with the towering conifers that slope to the rear valley.

Glanmore Castle

Currently on the market for €685,000 via Sherry FitzGerald Wicklow, you can take a full virtual tour of the property through our gallery below.
