Ahead of the DVD release of Normal People, watch Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones audition as Connell and Marianne

Considering Normal People came out in April, you’re well due and deserving of another rewatch. Mentally, you’re still stuck in March anyway.

Ahead of the DVD release on November 2, the Normal People Twitter account has shared an unseen clip from March 2019 of Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal reciting their lines as Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron. They’re reading from Episode 2 of the Hulu/BBC show, when they’re having a discussion about their relationship in the so-called Ghost House in Sligo.

Director Lenny Abrahamson told British Vogue, “Watching this clip again, I’m struck by how much of what sang in the finished scenes is there already. Daisy and Paul were so clearly right from the very beginning of the journey.” Paul Mescal agrees, telling British Vogue, “I knew instantly she was going to be playing Marianne. It just felt inevitable that we would be playing these characters together.”

“It’s very strange watching this back – the day was a complete blur for me as I was so full of nerves,” said Daisy Edgar-Jones. “I couldn’t really remember what happened in the room, so it’s really interesting to see that the dynamic between the characters was there so early on despite my terror. It’s also funny to see Paul and I when we didn’t know each other as we’re now such close friends.”
