Watch: Actor Ian McKellen Receives His First Marriage Proposal

Ian McKellen

2015 has been a huge year for the LGBT community. Ireland made history by being the first country to legalise same-sex marriage (today is also the day of our Pride parade), and it didn’t take long for the United States to follow example and do the exact same thing.

Yesterday, the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states and one of our favourite all time actors, the brilliant Sir Ian McKellen was obviously in a celebratory mood. McKellen, who is gay himself, has long championed the cause for same-sex couples and posted up an adorable video of his first ‘marriage proposal?, from fellow actor Derek Jacobi. In Vine videos posted to BuzzFeed accounts, the duo – who are (very fittingly) also acting as this year’s NYC Gay Pride grand marshals – celebrated with Stonewall Inn t-shirts (a tribute to the bar thought to be the birthplace of the American gay-rights movement), colourful confetti and a faux marriage proposal, all while blasting Queen’s ?We Are The Champions!? in the background.

The whole thing is adorable and fun to watch. ?Will you marry me?? asks Jacobi in the short clip. ?I will, and now I can!? responds a clearly delighted McKellen. At which point fun ensues; confetti is thrown in the air, Queen comes on and the pair rejoice. McKellen gets bonus points for his suitably wonderful hat, which we would like to borrow. Watch the short video:

What do you think of the video? We love it.
