Last weekend, myself and my group of friends sat around my sister’s new kitchen table and, as it does, talk turned to her upcoming wedding and the thing that will make it succeed?or fail: the music.
Personally, I feel the best Irish weddings should be musically reminiscent of those 90s discos you attended without telling your parents – with a touch more class and wedding cake thrown in. You should know all the songs, the cheesier, the better. Except, of course, when it comes to the first dance. At least, that’s according to my sister. She wants zero first dance cheese and something that hasn’t been played to death. And while we appreciate that many enjoy a classic or more traditional first dance (and there’s nothing wrong with that), those that wish to think?outside the musical box should avoid the following songs:
Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud
According to Spotify, Ed Sheeran is the top choice for couples with an analysis of 400,000 wedding playlists finding that the English singer-songwriter was the most popular first track. We’d hazard a guess that Ed well knew what he was doing in this respect because the video is based around one theatrical first dance type setting and Ed’s even wearing a waistcoat. It’s romantic and dreamy, but my God have we heard it way too many times.
Etta James – At Last
It worked when Michelle and Obama danced to it, but I feel weird about the lyrics which seem to seem to imply her life was pretty meaningless until she found a man:??My lonely days are over/ And life is like a song.? Okay then…
Can’t Help Falling In Love – Elvis Presley
I love Elvis, but this track could go to the song graveyard forever, and I’d never be sorry, such is the amount of times I’ve heard it – at a wedding or not.
Other artists on the list include Ed again with his song Tenerife Sea and Adele’s Make You Feel My Love.
Check out the rest of the list below and tell us in the comments, did you first dance to any of these? (No judgement if you did).
