There May Be More Twilight Movies

There May Be More Twilight Movies

Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in Twilight.

Be still our teenage-trapped-in-an-adult-body hearts, Twilight is back. Earlier this week the author and millionaire Stephenie Meyer and Lion’s Gate announced that five short movies based on the characters of Twilight will be screened on Facebook. Five female directors will be sought to create these films for a series called ?The Storytellers – New Creative Voices of?The Twilight Saga?. While many critics pointed out the patriarchial undertone of the Twilight movies at the time of its release – possesive love interest, teenage marriage and embracing the whole carrying a vampire baby to term do not a feminist fairytale make – this venture has the involvement of Women in Film, an organisation which aims to increase the number of female directors in the industry.

The five lucky female directors will be selected by a panel comprised of Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Meyer and Bella Swan herself, Ms. Kristen Stewart. Lion’s Gate chairman Michael Burns has hinted at this project being more than an exercise in empowerment, “This is the just the beginning – a template, if you will. You can probably guess what might be coming next.”

Might that ‘next’ be another Twilight movie? Or will we see the further adventures of fan favourite characters like Alice and Jasper? Or is this an elaborate ploy to get K-Stew and R-Patz in the same room and break Tumblr once and for all?
