From Popstars to I’m A Celeb: 9 of Nadine Coyle’s best TV moments

Nadine Coyle best moments

As Nadine Coyle settles into life in the jungle, we’re looking back at some of her most famous TV moments

Nadine Coyle is just one of 10 celebrities to enter the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here jungle. In her introduction video, the Derry-born singer said she’s best known for being in the band Girls Aloud – but our memories of her precede that.

Here we’re looking back at some of our favourite Nadine moments from years gone by (and yes, we’ve included ‘flour’).

Auditioning for Irish Popstars in 2001

Nadine famously lied about her age in order to audition for the Irish version of the UK talent series Popstars. Despite being just 16 years of age, the Derry native pretended to be 18. Her secret went undetected… for a while.

After a soulful rendition of It Must Have Been Love by Roxette, Nadine moved forward to the dance round – though this didn’t go as well as she’d hoped. Still, Louis Walsh was impressed and Nadine was confirmed as one of the members of his new band ‘Six’.

‘What date of birth did I say?’

Sadly, Nadine’s ‘Six’ journey was short-lived. In an on-camera interview, the teen let her true age slip when she said that her, “date of birth is the fifteenth of the sixth, ’85, making me a Gemini”.

When talent judge Linda Martin asked to see some proof of ID, Nadine pretended to search for her passport (even ringing her mother to ‘look for it’), before eventually admitting that she was younger than the show’s age requirement. She was subsequently sent home and removed from the band.

Popstars: the rivals audition

Once she turned 17 in 2002, Nadine was free to audition for the UK’s Popstars: The Rivals. Singing Eva Cassidy’s Fields of Gold for Louis Walsh, Geri Haliwell and Pete Waterman, she sailed through to the next round.

‘I’m not a dancer’

During her Popstars: The Rivals journey, we (once again) saw Nadine struggle to pick up the choreography. However, her persistent efforts to grasp it gained her many fans. Something about the success of the underdog is heartwarming, right?

Before long, Nadine was selected to form Girls Aloud, a band which went on to sell more than four million albums in the UK alone.

‘You don’t say a Hail Mary in here…’

In 2006, Nadine and her bandmates travelled to China for a six-part TV series called Girls Aloud: Off the Record. In the fifth episode, Nadine’s traditional (read: religious) Irish roots shone through when, on a trip to a Buddhist temple, she said she wanted to say a prayer. “But you don’t say a Hail Mary in here…’

Tribute to Boyzone’s Stephen Gately

In 2010, Nadine joined Irish boyband, Boyzone, for a once-off performance in honour of the late Stephen Gately. Singing Love Me For A Reason on ITV, their performance received a standing ovation.

‘Working with flour’

This six-second clip of Nadine saying ‘flour’ went viral in recent years, for no reason other than her Derry accent is incredibly strong. You can take the girl out of Derry…

‘The worst that could happen is… death’

There’s no doubt the 34-year-old has a way with words – particularly when she’s being blunt. In her promo video for I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, she quite rightly said, “The worst that could happen is… death”.

And when she and campmate Adele had to go their separate ways (Adele to row a canoe and Nadine to jump out of a plane), Adele kindly said she’d name the canoe after Nadine.

“As long as it’s not ‘in memory of’,” said the Derry girl.

‘My god, Caitlyn, I’m proud of us both’

Not only was Nadine’s skydive a huge success, but she also formed an unexpected friendship with Hollywood A-lister, Caitlyn Jenner. When both women returned safely to earth, they hugged and rejoiced that they’d survived.

Nadine Coyle’s I’m A Celebrity journey continues on ITV at 9 pm.
