IFTA Film & Drama Awards 2016: The Winners & Photos

Though there was a lack of pre-event promotion again this year, perhaps still down to the fact that they’ve split the IFTAs in two (yes, it’s a tad confusing), the IFTA Film and Drama Awards (broadcast Sunday on TV3 at 9PM) were a grand spectacle and sought to honour the best that Irish film and TV had to offer in the past twelve’months.

The big winner of tonight?was Room (such a deserving winner), solidly ending its award season run on home shores and scooping up seven awards, including Best Film, Best Script Film,?Best Director,?Editing and?Original Music. Saoirse Ronan?took home the Best Actress gong (another statuette to add multiple wins this season) for her acclaimed turn in Brooklyn, and accepting the award via video link in New York; she said: “To have the support of the Irish people has been the greatest honour.”

The all-around legend?that is Liam Neeson was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to him by President Michael D Higgins. The Taken star urged more support of the Irish Film Board in order for Irish film to continue to flourish.?Distinguished actress, producer and humanitarian Roma Downey also received the Irish Diaspora Award presented to her by musician and fellow humanitarian Bob Geldof.

Other notable winners included Ben Cleary’s short Stutterer (which also won an Oscar),?Ab? Media’s Irish language series An Klondike?and?Ken Wardrop’s Mom & Me.
