Halloween had the biggest movie opening ever with a female lead over 55

Halloween had the biggest movie opening ever with a female lead over 55

Jamie Lee Curtis’ latest instalment of Halloween has smashed numerous records in its opening weekend. Not only is this great news for the cast and production team, but also for women of Hollywood in general.

“OK,” actress and producer Jamie Lee Curtis announced on Twitter. “I’m going for one BOAST post. Biggest horror movie opening with a female lead. Biggest movie opening with a female lead over 55. Second biggest October movie opening ever. Biggest Halloween opening ever.” She rounded the tweet off with the hashtag #WomenGetThingsDone.

The film, which follows on from its 1978 original, raked in over $78 million in the space of three days in the United States alone. It made $14.3 million across 23 international audiences, bringing its overall opening weekend figures to $91 million.

While 59-year-old Curtis is the leading lady, she’s supported by two other female actresses; namely Judy Greer and Andi Matichak, who play her daughter and granddaughter respectively.

Halloween had the second biggest October movie opening ever; only falling behind Venom, which premiered two weeks ago and garnered $80 million from its American audience alone. Jamie Lee Curtis is fighting for the number one spot, however. She tweeted, “Thank you to all the first responders! Well, I guess the horse race is on and my competitive streak has kicked into gear. Let’s all see if we can help my favorite horses – THREE TALL WOMEN, MURDERING MICHAEL MYERS – and HALLOWEEN HUSTLE, and let’s leave VAPID VENOM in the dust!”

This version of Halloween ignores the several remakes and spin-offs that have been made over the years; instead, it focuses on the plot and cast of the original, in which serial killer Michael Myers takes the life of three innocent teenagers. Character Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) survived the knife attack, but 40 years on, Myers is ready to finish the job.

Without giving away spoilers, Laurie is ready for the killer’s return. After all, she’s had four decades to prepare.

Halloween is in cinemas nationwide now. Watch the trailer below:
