Airfield Awakens

Airfield in Dundrum is Dublin’s only farm smack dab in the middle of the city. The land belongs to an old Dublin family, the Overends, with? a long history of civic action and philanthropy dating back to 1924 when Dublin had one of the worst rates of poverty and malnutrition.

Airfield has recently undergone an extensive renovation in order to further dedicate itself to educational and recreational activities with a particular focus on food and agriculture. Launching this weekend, it has a fantastic farm-to-table restaurant as well as a full programme of events with a family-friendly bent. There will be an acrobatic performance from Barren Carousel that involves the shenanigans of a farmer and two acrobats, whilst the Bohemian String orchestra will be performing a repertoire that stretches from new to classic compositions.

With a particular dedication and passion for agriculture and farming there will be garden tours, yarning workshops, woodland tours and workshops in seeding and farming. For the little people, the options are plentiful, from face-painting and a petting farm to a performance by Dog & String Puppet theatre. Not to be missed is the screening of Oscar-winning short film Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue. Here’s hoping the weather holds out and that us city jackeens can embrace the wholesome outdoors.
