3 renovation projects to buy in Ireland for less than €65,000

Fancy a church conversion, tackling a crumbling cottage, or renoing a stone townhouse that backs onto the ocean? These renovation projects in Donegal, Mayo or Kerry could be for you.

We’ve all dreamed about it.

Getting stuck into an incredible renovation, quickly glazing over the months and months of hard labour, planning permission meetings and unbudgeted-for “hiccups”, and straight to Kevin McCloud walking singing your praises as he slowly walks through your like-new home.

But if you really really want to do it, to throw yourself into a big project (and I mean BIG), you might want to take a peek at these three…

A crumbling farmhouse in Co Mayo
€30,000

Located just outside the lively town of Foxford, this is clearly a project. Located on half an acre, its got a river running along the rear boundary and looks out onto Mayo’s Larganmore Mountain, which has a lovely looped walk around it.

The house itself has only recently had the access cleared and remains in an unrestored state with the original window frames and attached outhouses. The rear of the house forms a courtyard, perfect for parking for a private garden.

It has no plumbing or electrics and it looks like you might have to completely reinforce the entire building… but look at those beautiful stone walls! This one has oodles of potential if you could stomach the job.

A church conversion in Co Donegal
€65,000

Near the Donegal-Tyrone border and just outside the town of Castlefin is this gorgeous former Church of Ireland church. Built in 1870, it’s been derelict for some time and the structure remains almost untouched from its time as a functioning church, with a main and a kitchen and public bathrooms located to the rear.

It’s unclear whether the building is listing or not but church buildings typically are, so you would have to keep this in mind when seeking planning. It’s got some beautiful country views despite being within the town borders and stretches toa sizeable 186 square metres.

With the original slate roof, stunning stonework and plenty of ornate features inside, it offers its owner plenty to work it.

€35,000

With a frontage right bang in the middle of Tarbert village in Co Kerry and a long back garden that runs straight into the Shannon Estuary, this is a very interesting buy.

Clearly someone has already begun the job of restoring the three-bed property, repointing the front and replacing the sash windows with new ones. With high ceilings that you wouldn’t expect and original features like the shutters and some cornicing, its a sizeable 146-square-metre house.

Mostly gutted of the debris inside, the rear of the house and garden is in need of some TLC, however, the garden leads right down to a sheltered corner of the estuary and, based on what the neighbours have done, there’s plenty of opportunity here.
