The 2016 Oscar Nominations: Irish Talent For The Win

Awards season is now in full swing, kicking off with the Golden Globes last Sunday. Now the nominations are here for Hollywood’s biggest night and the most important honor to own as an actor. Today is the day the 88th?Academy Award nominees are?announced ahead of the ceremony on February 28th?at the Dolby Theatre?at Hollywood & Highland Center?in Hollywood. ?The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

In Irish talent, Room?is?nominated in the Best Picture category,?Lenny Abrahamson is up for?Best Director for?Room,?Saoirse Ronan has been nominated for Best Actress in Brooklyn and Michael Fassbender is up for ?Best Actor for?Steve Jobs, and?Brooklyn and Room are nominated for Adapted?Screenplay.

As predicted, “The Danish Girl” features heavily, with Eddie Redmayne up for Best Actor, as well as nominations for Costume Design and Production Design. Elsewhere “The Revenant“, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, and “The Martian“, have all been honoured with nominations.

The?Revenant leads with 12 ?nominations,?Mad Max: Fury Road?has 10, ?The?Martian was nominated for 7 awards,?Spotlight, Bridge Of Spies and Carol were nominated for 6 and The Big Short and Star Wars: The Force Awakens are up for 5 awards.

Now a six-time Oscar nominee, Leonardo DiCaprio is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for The Revenant?and this is his year. The Revenant‘s IMDb trivia tells us that during the making of The Revenant, Leo “had to devour a raw slab of bison’s liver, even though he is vegetarian. He also had to learn to shoot a musket, build a fire, speak two Native American languages (Pawnee and Arikara), and study with a doctor who specializes in ancient healing techniques. DiCaprio calls it the hardest performance of his career.”
