34 arrested, 13 shops damaged and 11 garda vehicles damaged and destroyed in Dublin violence
Dublin City Centre is waking up to the aftermath of violent scenes this morning following a night of rioting that saw clashes with gardaí, shops smashed and looted and buses, Luas carriages set on fire. The unrest came after five people, including three young children, were hospitalised after a suspected stabbing in Parnell Square yesterday afternoon. The scenes of violence have been widely condemned, with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris describing those carrying out the rioting as a “complete lunatic, hooligan faction”. At around 11.30pm last night, Garda Chief Superintendent Patrick McMenamin said the city centre was “calm and returning to normal”, adding that there had been “no serious injuries reported” to the public or to gardaí. This morning, public transport is still disrupted, while Gardaí remain at the scene of yesterday’s attack on Parnell Street East.

Pistorius, 37, is to appear before a parole board at a correctional centre outside Pretoria where he is currently detained. After a hearing, the board is to review the ex-athlete’s profile and decide whether he “is suitable or not for social reintegration”, the department of correctional services said. Offensive, hostile and unrepentant: Geert Wilders in his own words
The victory of Geert Wilders’s far-right PVV party in the Dutch elections has taken pollsters and politicians across Europe by surprise. But Wilders is no newcomer. For years he has attempted to woo voters with his brazenly anti-Islamic policies, hostility to migration and suspicion of Brussels. In the election campaign, he appeared to win over voters with a slightly softer version of his familiar rhetoric, telling one interviewer he could put his views on Islam “on ice” and declaring in a debate that he wanted to be “a prime minister for all Dutch people”.
