Man killed in Co Donegal workplace accident named as Stephen Montgomery
A man who was killed in a workplace accident in Gaoth Dobhair, Co Donegal yesterday has been named as Stephen Montgomery. It is understood that Stephen was clearing rocks in the Bloody Forelands area of Bunbeg when he was struck by a rock. A Garda spokesperson confirmed they are investigating the incident involving an “apparent explosion”.

Thousands of workers are missing out on flat-rate employment tax allowances after “bizarre discrepancies” emerged in the system. In some cases, women doing the same job as men can claim more than their male colleagues. Hospital nurses can claim for the cost of registration fees, but veterinary nurses cannot. Almost nine in 10 parents are cutting back or delaying spending in order to pay the voluntary contribution charge in post-primary schools, which can cost as much as €550 per child. Furthermore, schools are increasingly using voluntary contributions to cover basic day-to-day running costs and on the likes of books, classroom materials and stationery, a new report has found.

Australian volcano near Antarctica captured on satellite spewing lava
One of Australia’s two active volcanoes on an island near Antarctica – known as Big Ben – has been spotted by satellite spewing lava. The lava flow on the uninhabited Heard Island, about 4,100 kilometres south-west of Perth and 1,500km north of Antarctica, is part of an ongoing eruption that was first noted more than a decade ago.

Covid: Top Chinese scientist says don’t rule out lab leak
The possibility the Covid virus leaked from a laboratory should not be ruled out, a former top Chinese government scientist has told BBC News. As head of China’s Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Prof George Gao played a key role in the pandemic response and efforts to trace its origins. China’s government dismisses any suggestion the disease may have originated in a Wuhan laboratory. But Prof Gao is less forthright. In an interview for the BBC Radio 4 podcast Fever: The Hunt for Covid’s Origin, Prof Gao says: “You can always suspect anything. That’s science. Don’t rule out anything.”

Holmes, 63, who also presented on the show, has accused Schofield of “toxicity” amid the furore over the culture on the ITV daytime programme. Host Schofield, 61, admitted last Friday to an “unwise, but not illegal” affair with a younger male colleague on the show and has now quit the commercial broadcaster and been dropped by his talent agency YMU.
