Raheny arrest

A murder investigation has been launched after a woman’s body was discovered in the early hours of this morning at a house in Raheny. A man aged in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently detained at a Garda station in north Dublin under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984

Sligo woman hit by train

Tributes pour in after a woman in her 40s — named locally as Jessica McLoughlin — died after being hit by a train in Co Sligo at around 4pm yesterday. A second woman in her 20s was hospitalised with serious injuries. It’s understood that the women attempted to jump clear of the train but that they were hit. Around 100 people were on board the train when the incident happened, officials said. Irish Rail has launched an internal review into the incident.

Poland protests

Yesterday, protests took place in over 40 Polish cities to highlight the death of 33-year-old Dorota Lalik, who was five months’ pregnant and died of sepsis in a hospital in Nowy Targ, southern Poland in late May. Organisers of the nationwide protests, a collection of Polish women’s rights groups, said that Dorota was the fifth pregnant woman to have died in Polish hospitals due to complications since the country’s Constitutional Tribunal introduced a near-total ban on abortion in October 2020. Approximately 1,500 people turned up for the Warsaw protest, chanting, “Not one more”.

79 dead after boat sinks

A fishing boat crammed with migrants trying to reach Europe capsized and sank on Wednesday off the coast of Greece, and at least 79 people are dead. It was unclear how many passengers were missing, but some initial reports suggested hundreds of people may have been aboard when the boat went down far from shore.

Philippines earthquake

An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck the Philippines’ main island today, halting some railway operations in the capital Manila. No casualties or major damage were reported after the quake, which struck out at sea at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.21 miles) and was felt in nearby provinces, the Philippine seismology agency said.
