A garda sergeant is accused of asking another, lower-ranking garda to avoid making a record of an incident in which the sergeant allegedly assaulted a suspect. Waterford District Court heard on Monday that Garda Sergeant William Doyle is accused of two charges, one of a section 2 assault against a suspect, under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, and another of attempting to pervert the course of justice by allegedly requesting no record be taken.

Average of 10 homeless people died each month during 2020
An average of 10 homeless people died every month in the State in 2020, according to the latest statistics from the Health Research Board (HRB). Data from closed coroners’ files across Ireland shows 121 people who were homeless died during that year, up from 92 people in 2019.

Gardai have a “new starting line” in dealing with anti-migrant protests after there were clashes awaiting asylum-seekers arriving in Roscrea. There was one arrest as asylum seekers were being transported to Racket Hall Hotel, yesterday, where both gardaí and protestors were shoved and knocked to the ground in ugly scuffles. Now a more “robust” Garda response to anti-immigrant protests – as seen in Roscrea yesterday – is set to be repeated, if necessary, when the Dáil returns on Wednesday, security sources have said.

25 dolphins rescued after getting stranded on Kerry beach
An animal rescue group helped guide 25 dolphins back to the sea after they became beached off the coast of Kerry. Six common dolphins initially became stranded in Cloghane, north Kerry, on Sunday and the rest of the pod soon followed them to the shallow water. Volunteers from the North Kerry Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) banded together to refloat and reunite the animals before guiding them out over the sandbars to deeper water.

Former US president Donald Trump secured a resounding victory in the first 2024 Republican presidential contest in Iowa, asserting his command over the party despite facing scores of criminal charges as he seeks a rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, 45, finished well behind in second place, edging out former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, 51, as they battle to emerge as the chief alternative to Trump. Mr Trump, 77, won by an unprecedented margin for an Iowa Republican contest, strengthening his case that his nomination is a foregone conclusion given his massive lead in national polls.

Emmys 2024: Succession, The Bear and Beef among winners
Succession, Beef and The Bear were the big winners at the Emmy Awards, which took place on Monday in Los Angeles. Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen all took home acting prizes for Succession, while the show also won best drama series overall. Creator Jesse Armstrong said it was “a great sadness to end the show, but it was a great pleasure to do it”. Also at the ceremony, Sir Elton John won his first Emmy Award, finally giving him EGOT status.

Rain, sleet and snow in Ulster, north Connacht and north Leinster will transition mostly to rain and drizzle by mid-morning. It’ll be brighter further south with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with light to moderate southwest to west winds. A mix of clear spells and patchy cloud along with scattered outbreaks of light rain, drizzle, sleet and snow for a time tonight. Wintry showers will become increasingly confined to the west and north as the night goes on. Lowest temperatures of -4 to -1 degrees with a sharp to severe frost and icy stretches forming. A light northerly or variable breeze will allow patches of fog or freezing fog to develop. Several Status Yellow Low Temperature/Snow and Ice warnings have also been issued for counties around the country.
