In case you missed it: The weekend news round up, from monkeypox to Travis Barker’s house tour

Political protest, another Kravis wedding, and growing concerns about the monkeypox virus, here’s what people were talking about over the weekend.

Whether you prefer to switch off and unwind over the weekend, or find it tricky to keep up to speed with the rapid fire news cycle, we’re keeping a watchful eye on trending topics so that you don’t have to.

From entertainment news and new releases to tributes marking the anniversary of historical events, there was a broad scope of trending topics filling our newsfeeds and timelines over the past few days.

If you want to catch up quickly, here’s a round up of everything you might have missed in this week’s news cycle…

Growing concerns over monkeypox virus

As confirmed cases in the UK reach a total of 20, the HSE set up a multidisciplinary incident management team to prepare for the potential arrival of monkeypox in Ireland. We put together a rundown of everything you need to know about the rare virus that you can read right here.

Political protest takes to the Cannes Film Festival

In protest of the rape of Ukrainian civilians at the hands of Russian forces, a protester stripped on the red carpet, bearing the words ‘Stop Raping Us’ on her chest and stomach in the Ukrainian colours of blue and yellow. She had ‘SCUM’ written on her back, identifying her as an activist from the 1967 radical feminist group, SCUM Manifesto.

The Wagatha Christie trial wrapped up

Playing out over six days in courtroom number 13 at the Royal Courts of Justice, the libel trial involving Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy has drawn to a close — and it garnered quite a bit of attention online. As we await the judge’s ruling, we rounded up some of the standout moments from the explosive trial.

Tributes pour in for the victims of the Manchester Arena attacks

Sunday 22 May marked the fifth anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack. An atrocity that saw innocent people go to a pop concert and never return, tributes poured in for the 22 victims of this senseless act of terror. A memorial was erected in Victoria Station and a moment of silence was held at 10.31am.

The seventh anniversary of #MarRef

Sunday marked seven years since the people of Ireland voted to legalise gay marriage, enshrining the equal right in our Constitution. Though it was a very proud day for the country, it highlights just how much work is still needed to dismantle homophobic and transphobic attitudes. The anniversary coincides with the release of ILGA’s ‘Rainbow Europe’ ranking, which placed Ireland in 16th place for LGBTQ+ rights in Europe largely due to lack of hate crime legislation and rates of conversion therapy.

Travis Barker’s house tour

In a shocking revelation that no one was expecting, there is absolutely no leather in Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker’s Calabasas home. Opening up his space to Architectural Digest, the newly betrothed Barker lives in a haven of earthy neutrals, understated organic textures and pared-back relaxation. Read all about it right here.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker tie the knot… again

Speaking of Mr Barker, himself and Kourtney Kardashian escaped to a castle in Italy overlooking the Gulf of Portofino over the weekend. This will be their third wedding, after a practice run in Vegas and an intimate courtroom wedding to make it official. This time round, their families and close friends gathered around them, and a larger LA reception is apparently in the pipeline.
