Gardaí hoping to interview woman in connection with boy’s death
Gardaí investigating the death of six-year-old Matthew Healy following an incident at Rathmoylan in Co Waterford on Friday are hoping to interview the woman arrested in connection with the boy’s death today or in the coming days. The woman has not yet been formally interviewed by investigating gardaí as she has been under medical supervision since her arrest. She will not be interviewed by detectives until she is deemed medically fit. She may be deemed well enough to be interviewed later today, or in the early days of this week. Matthew was discovered in a car in the Dunmore East area shortly after midnight on Friday. The EU’s Israel-Gaza response has been poor according to two-thirds of Irish voters
The European Union’s standing has been damaged among three-in-four Irish young people as a result of the bloc’s response to the current conflict in Gaza. In the first poll on voting preferences and sentiment ahead of June’s European elections, The Journal/Ireland Thinks found that those surveyed across all aged groups were markedly unsatisfied with the EU’s handling of the conflict. The response of EU leadership figures to the deadly 7 October attack by Hamas on Israel and the death and destruction in Gaza that has followed has sparked tensions among different member states.

Uisce Éireann ‘taking advice’ on warnings to over 220,000 people about presence of toxic chemicals
Uisce Éireann has said it is taking advice on whether it needs to warn more than 220,000 consumers that their drinking water contains a level of toxic chemicals called trihalomethanes in excess of that permitted under European Union limits. The State water authority has been working for several years to eliminate trihalomethanes, known as THMs, from drinking water supplies which were the subject of a European Court of Justice (ECJ) finding against Ireland in recent weeks.

Number of patients dying before ambulance arrives is up by 70% in eight years
The number of people who had died by the time an ambulance got to their home has increased by 70% in the last eight years, according to the HSE. For 1,108 callouts last year attended by the National Ambulance Service, the person was deceased by the time of arrival. This is up 100 on the 2022 figure, which was 1,008. In 2016, when data on such response times first became available, there were only 657 deaths at the time of ambulance arrival. HSE figures also show that the number of ambulances that waited more than an hour to hand over patients at hospitals has reduced in the last year.

Israeli strikes kill dozens in Rafah as raid rescues two hostages
Israel says two male Israeli hostages have been rescued in Rafah, as Israeli air strikes hit the southern Gazan city. The Israeli military says Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, are in “good medical condition”. Israel says there was “aerial coverage and a wave of strikes” to accompany the hostage raid. A spokesman for the Hamas-run health ministry says at least 67 Palestinians were killed in the strikes. It follows warnings from the international community over Israel’s planned offensive in the city, where 1.5 million people are sheltering. Israel launched its operations in Gaza after more than 1,200 people were killed on 7 October by Hamas, who also took 253 people hostage. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says more than 28,100 Palestinians have been killed and more than 67,500 injured since then.
