New €320m runway at Dublin Airport to open
The first commercial flight is due to take off from Dublin Airport’s new north runway later today. The 3.1km long facility will provide extra capacity for growth for the airport after it has fully recovered from the pandemic. The largest infrastructure project in the country, it has been delivered on time and within the €320m budget, paid for by the airport operator daa’s own revenues and borrowings.

Westmeath Rose Rachel Duffy became emotional as she was crowned the 62nd International Rose of Tralee at last night’s finale. With tears in her eyes as she received her Rose of Tralee sash, Rachel said: “I’m in total shock. We have had a great year in Westmeath with the Fleadh Cheoil and now the Rose of Tralee.”

Ukraine Independence Day – live: Country reborn after Russia invaded, Zelensky says
Six months to the day since Vladimir Putin launched his invasion, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said his country has been “reborn” through its fight for freedom. In a pre-recorded speech to mark Ukrainian Independence Day on Wednesday, the wartime leader said: “A new nation appeared in the world on 24 February at 4 in the morning. It was not born, but reborn. A nation that did not cry, scream or take fright. One that did not flee. Did not give up. And did not forget.” Dressed in his trademark combat fatigues, the 44-year-old added: “What for us is the end of the war? We used to say: peace. Now we say: victory.”

Eurotunnel passengers forced to leave train beneath English Channel
Eurotunnel passengers had to be evacuated from a train after it broke down beneath the English Channel. They were transferred to a cargo train but complained of being stuck in the sub-sea tunnel for nearly five hours, citing issues with the replacement transport.
