Scientists Say They Have Discovered The Cure For A Hangover

Can you imagine if we could go out for our night on the town and not worry about the dreaded after-effects the next day? Well, this may soon be a reality if scientists in Australia have anything to do with it.

And the ultimate hangover cure according to science? Eating fruit, more specifically, a pear (or its juice) before you start drinking is said to be the cure for all that ails you the morning after the night before.

According to ABC, Australian scientists at CSIRO found that if you consume pears before drinking, it can severely dent the symptoms of hangovers – such as having trouble concentrating.

The only problem is that you need to eat Korean pears (hard to lay hands on over here unfortunately, but these are commonly thought of as a hangover cure in the Far East). They’ve already found some other medicinal attributes to the fruit and believe it can help to reduce cholesterol, constipation, and inflammation, but if the fruit were to actually cure hangovers, we’d seriously be forever grateful.

Pears could be the answer to our hangover cure prayers.

Manny Noakes, research director at CSIRO, said, “Reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption.”

“Overall hangover severity, as measured by a 14 item hangover symptom scale, was significantly reduced in the pear group compared to those having a placebo drink, with the most pronounced effect seen on the specific symptom of ‘trouble concentrating,” he explained.

The catch is that you have to drink around 220ml before you start drinking, otherwise it won’t help. “I should make the point that the effect was demonstrated if you take pear juice before alcohol consumption,” Noakes added. “Once you have a hangover, there is no evidence that it will do you any good.”

While the study is not scheduled to be finished for another two months, its initial findings could back up a study by researchers in the US, which found that the prickly pear cactus could reduce inflammation of the liver after a night on the sauce.

Who would have thought it could all come down to the humble pear?

Interesting indeed, what do you make of this?
