Event Guide: March 2015

Has anyone noticed the slight improvement in weather in the last few days? Ok, the sun may not be splitting the stones(do people actually say that, or was it just our Irish teachers?), but temperatures are defintiely heading in the right direction. Spring is finally here, it only took four weeks! Along with an improvement in weather, what else has March got in store for us?

There are several must-see events taking place both in Dublin and across the country but we’ve managed to whittle it down to these few unmissables!

Everyone’s favourite ex-Oasis member Noel Gallagher(let’s face it, nobody likes Liam) plays the 3Arena with his High Flying Birds on March 4th with support from Black Rivers. Tickets ranging from €59.50-?79.50 are still available from Ticketmaster.

March 5th is the night of the Meteor Choice Music Prize which honours the best music in Ireland from the last year. With only two awards to hand out, for Best Album and Best Single, the ceremony will be padded out by performances from previous winners Delorentos as well as James Vincent McMorrow, We Cut Corners and The Riptide Movement. There are still some tickets floating around and you can also keep an eye out for competitions over the next few days.

Winners of Best British Group at the Brit awards this week, Royal Blood, whose album we named in our top ten of 2014 take to the Olympia Theatre stage on March 9th to bombard us with their unique sound created entirely using only a bass guitar and drums. Not to be missed!

Visit the zoo like you’ve never seen it before! The world famous Bodies World Exhibition returns to the Ambassador Theatre on March 12th for a limited run. This time around, however, Dr. Gunther Von Hagens, inventor of plastination, will give visitors to the exhibition the opportunity to explore the intricate biology and physiology of some of the world’s most spectacular animals.?Admittance to the exhibition will cost €14 for adults and €8 for kids and if the previous exhibition is anything to go by this will be a truly fascinating day out.

The St. Patrick’s Festival kicks into gear on March 14th with a whole host of events taking place between then and St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday the 17th. The highlight of the festival is obviously the Parade but if you’re looking for something else to do over the weekend there are plenty of events to get involved in. From waltzers to family attractions to the carousel, there is something for everyone at the Funfairs which open on Saturday at Merrion Square and Custom House Quay. Sunday in Merrion Square sees the Big Day Out which is a free day-long street carnival bursting with energy, colour, whimsical antics and the truly bizarre. Learn the steps, enjoy live traditional music and soak up the atmosphere at the Festival C?il? on Monday from 4.30pm in St. Stephen’s Green.?If you’re not exhausted after all those festivities, Jameson are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day gig on Monday evening in Vicar Street headlined by Little Green Cars who will be supported by Delorentos and We Cut Corners.

Rumoured to besupporting Ed Sheeran at his forthcoming, now sold-out, Croke Park shows, Gavin James plays his biggest headline gig to date at The Olympia Theatre on the 20th of March. He is the first artist to headline the iconic venue without having released an album yet. A pretty impressive feat we must admit! Check out Gavin’s gorgeous new single above. Swoon!

Our final recommendation for the month of March goes to the terrifically talented and extremely exciting Booka Brass Band. They play Vicar Street on March 27th with tickets only €19! Many claimed Booka Brass Band stole the show at Longitude last summer as they packed out the Speakeasy tent and played such an enthralling gig that they were forced to continue out in the fields long after the stage had been shut down. Trust us, these guys will blow you away.
