The micro mini skirt is back again

by Holly O'Neill
06th Jul 2022

We've had teeny bags and massive hats, low-rise jeans and upside-down bikinis. Now it's the micro-mini skirt's moment in the spotlight.

Depending on who you ask, the resurgence of the micro mini helms the return of several eras. Either we’re swapping sweats for skin-baring to mark our belated entrance into the new Roaring Twenties, flashing back to the Sixties when the miniskirt and birthcontrol pills marked a societal shift, or that it sits alongside low-rise jeans and Britney Spears in the revival of all things Y2K. Vogue posits that it’s pandemic induced – that we’re looking to bare our arse to make up for masking our face.

Regardless, the mini of the moment is micro, leg baring and detailed – pleated, brightly coloured, diamante and sequin embellished or metallic. It was ubiquitous in the new season collections, from Prada to Proenza Schouler, but the most notable mini of the moment is that of Miu Miu.

The Miu Miu mini – pleated, micro and raw-edged – has graced every corner of magazine publishing, from Nicole Kidman on Vanity Fair to Zendaya for Interview and Naomi Campbell for W, been spotted on Hunter Schafer and Chiara Ferragni, has its own Instagram account, TikTok tutorials and legions of high street knock-offs. Safe to say, you’ll want one in your wardrobe for summer, and by the time we’ve tired of the Miu Miu mini, it’ll be back in style again, helming the return of a new era.
