The best new powerhouse retinol serums to know

Retinol is in it’s golden era, with beauty’s heavy hitters currently releasing formulas that have been years in the making at incredibly potent strengths. If you've had a touch-and-go experience with retinol before, it's time for a fresh start thanks to tolerant, effective, affordable new formulations.

If you have yet to try retinol’s line-reducing, collagen-production-stimulating, pigmentation-reducing, oil-regulating, skin-smoothing and radiance-boosting properties, you picked a great time to start.

“Retinol is dubbed the holy grail in skincare by dermatologists, pharmacists, cosmetic chemists, facialists and clients alike,” says Jennifer Rock, founder and CEO of Skingredients, the curated capsule range of skincare essentials which has just launched a pure and potent retinol in two strengths – 0.6% and 1% – for beginners and pros alike.

Pestle + Mortar are also catering to proficient users ready to take their next step with Superstar+ Pro Strength Retinoid Night Oil, €90, containing HPR, a powerhouse vitamin A derivative, at 1% strength – HPR is also the power behind Elizabeth Arden Retinol+HPR Ceramide Capsules Rapid Skin Renewing Serum capsules, €56, while The Ordinary have also released their highest strength retinoid formula yet with Retinal 0.2% Emulsion, €17.90.

La Mer’s new Rejuvenating Night Cream, €410, is a nightly moisturiser powered by a marine retinol alternative, plus their signature Miracle Broth to boost cell turnover for plumper, smoother skin. On the more affordable end of luxury, Clinique’s handy on-the-go, travel-friendly tube of Smart Clinical Repair AM/PM Retinoid Balm, €35, is a blend of 1% advanced retinoid and hyaluronic acid in an easy-to-use stick format to help smooth fine lines in a swipe.

If affordable is the main aim, Cerave’s Resurfacing Retinol Serum, €24.50, is dermatologist developed with niacinamide and three essential ceramides to protect the skin’s barrier while tackling skin texture issues, hyperpigmentation and post-acne scarring. For the sensitive-skinned, always look to La Roche-Posay, whose 0.3% Retinol + Vitamin B3 Serum, €48, is built for you, firming and smoothing while also soothing.

Happy skin rebooting.
