The 2021 Met Gala standout beauty moments

After two years off, the 2021 Met Gala red carpet had high expectations for extravagant glamour and the pent-up passion to preen paid off with sculptural hair, bejewelled eyes and spectacular beauty looks.

The theme at this year’s Gala was “American Independence” which in beauty, manifested as a lot of tributes to entertainers, artists and one of America’s greatest historical beauty eras; old Hollywood glamour.

All young rising female stars must have their Marilyn Monroe eras in America (see; Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian, Anna Nicole Smith, Scarlett Johanssen et al) and we are living in Billie Eilish’s peroxide bouffant Marilyn moment. Gemma Chan paid tribute to Hollywood’s first-ever Chinese-American star Anna May Wong, Grace Kelly was present in Kaia Gerber’s soft make-up and curled bob and Yara Shahidi channelled Josephine Baker in a 1920s braided and jewelled headpiece.

Tracee Ellis Ross’ blunt-cut bob was an ode to Grace Jones and Rita Hayworth was the inspiration for Eiza González’s curls. Lupita Nyong’o’s wore denim blue winged liner with sculptural hair inspired by the artwork of Lorna Simpson, Taraji P Henson came in Diana Ross cosplay, Kristen Stewart and Megan Fox had rockabilly Bettie Page bangs and Hollywood waves never looked as good as on Megan Thee Stallion, who summed it all up in one line; “I just feel like hot girl culture needs to give Hollywood glamour.”
