#ShopIrish: Magpie Rose gemstone jewellery bridges the gap between costume and fine pieces

Supporting Irish business is a passion of ours at Image, and it’s easy with so many entrepreneurial and innovative Irish businesses to buy from. From now until Christmas we are highlighting Irish businesses or business people that we are excited about. Today it’s Diane Woods of Magpie Rose Jewellery

What is your name, and what is your business?

Diane Woods, Magpie Rose Jewellery

How long have you been in business? And what was your mission from the outset?

We have been in business since late 2018. The mission from the outset was to design and create colourful and unique demi-fine gemstone jewellery that bridges the gap between costume and fine pieces. We want our jewellery to bring joy to the wearer and make everyday a day that sparkles!

Of what part of your business are you most proud?

We are most proud of the design part of the business and the uniqueness of the pieces.
Who are your business heroes? Personal heroes?
My business hero is Ruth Ni Loinsigh, the owner of Om Diva on Drury Street. She was the first to stock our jewellery and she is always a great support to me and all the other Irish designers that she stocks in Om Diva. My personal hero would be my Mum, her sense of style and grace while working full time in NCAD and looking after the whole family has always been an inspiration!

How have you found the last six months? – professionally and personally

The last six months have been unusual. Professionally, it has been a bit difficult as many of our stockists have had to close their doors, positively though our online store has performed relatively well. Personally – I discovered that I am definitely not cut out to be a teacher!!

What keeps you positive?

My family keeps me positive – we have two young boys, James aged 8 and Ben aged 5, who fill the house full of fun, laughter and total chaos!!
What new perspective (if any) have you gained from 2020?
I know its a cliche but it has made me realise how important it is to just slow down sometimes and enjoy the simple things – like walks and cycles with the kids down the seafront in Clontarf.
Best/worst moment from 2020?

Best moment – Our Staycation discovering the beauty of Northern Ireland’s coastlines. Worst – hearing all the heartbreaking stories of COVID-19.

How will you celebrate the holidays this year?

Like many, it will be a relatively quiet celebration this year. We will have my Mum and Dad over on Christmas Day while the boys go mad wrecking the house with their new toys and my husband Barry makes the dinner (I know I am lucky :-))

Another Irish business you want to shine a spotlight on?

I love Landa Bags. The pieces are absolutely beautiful and so well made!

Anything else you would like to let us know?
I am also an economist. I still work part-time as an economist for a large bank as it something that I really enjoy, each day is different and interesting especially in these unusual times!
