Louis Copeland’s 15 things every man should have

Louis Copeland’s 15 things every man should have

Louis Copeland & Sons has been a family business for four generations, a namesake label that began on Capel Street in 1933 and developed a devout audience of well dressed men across the globe and a client list that includes Pierce Brosnan, Colin Farrell and Richard Harris. Celebrating 90 years in business, the man whose name has become synonymous with fine tailoring shares 15 style musings and life lessons for the modern gentleman.

1.

Most importantly everybody needs a good tailor. A good tailor will ensure the perfect fit for all your garments, ensuring you look smart and stylish in everything you wear.

2.

A good piece of luggage is essential. A weekender travel bag has a compartment for your suit or blazer, shoes and can fit so much more, makes packing easier and makes you look the part with your quality leather luggage, so ensure durability in the luggage that you buy.

3.

Every man should have a good therapist, or someone in their life that’s their equivalent to a therapist for them, because we all need someone to rant to every now and then.

4.

A good watch is one of the most essential accessories every man should have, an accessory that looks smart and ensures you can always make sure you’re on time! My current choice of watch is the most recent Apple Watch.

5.

A shoe care kit, every man needs one for looking after your formal and casual shoes including your sneakers! For big events, having polished shoes will piece your outfit together. A shoe care kit needs to contain the different coloured polishes to use, and multiple brushes suitable for different fabrics.

6.

Although this is no longer necessary for me, every man should have a good barber. Once you find this barber, stay with him, he’ll learn to understand your hair and know what styles will look best on you.

7.

Every man should have a nice scent – people remember you by your scent, it leaves a lasting impression and can remind someone of you. I recommend spending a bit of time finding a fragrance that suits you.

8.

Every man needs a plain navy blue suit. This type of suit just gets you everywhere – job interviews, formal events, or worn casually, it can be styled in so many different ways.

9.

Every man should have a bow tie! A bow tie elevates any look to take you to that more sophisticated ensemble. Come and visit me in Capel Street to learn how to tie a bow tie so you don’t end up wearing it open around your neck by the end of the night.

10.

Obviously, a man should have two or three crisp white shirts. Replace these often as there’s nothing worse than seeing someone wear a white shirt that has turned grey.

11.

A navy blazer is essential. It can work in a smart casual way with chinos and a shirt with a pair of loafers, or more casually with jeans and a light piece of knitwear and sneakers. It’s a timeless piece to have in your wardrobe.

12.

A good pair of black or dark brown leather shoes! You will thank yourself later for investing in a high-quality pair that will last you for years to come.

13.

A good outerwear jacket is essential with Ireland’s unpredictable weather. My personal favourite outerwear piece is the black UBR parka, it’s really high quality, offering warmth, and is completely waterproof too.

14.

Funky socks, it’s fun to own some funky socks. I personally like our Louis Copeland navy and blue polka dot socks. They still look sophisticated but add a bit of edge to your outfit.

15.

Engaging in a hobby is essential for every man. Hobbies have many advantages for all individuals. In my case, my hobby entails meeting my trainer at the gym a few mornings each week. I take pleasure in the social engagement this provides, along with the awareness that it’s beneficial for my well-being. I genuinely find great enjoyment in it.
