Oscar de la Renta’s Most Iconic Moments

“I don’t really know how to do casual clothes.”
Oscar de la Renta, 1932 – 2014

This morning fashion fans the world over mourn the loss of Domincan-born American designer Oscar de la Renta. Earlier we collected together some of the most poignant tributes, now we take a look at some of his most iconic red carpet moments – a practice he made his own with sumptuous materials, impeccable and daring cuts, and a timeless elegance. Textbook de la Renta.

At this year’s Met Gala, Taylor Swift wore Oscar de la Renta. A natural choice considering the singer’s preppy all-American off-duty look.

Sarah Jessica Parker was one of his most constant champions, and this year wore the man, and his signature, to the Met Gala. Easily one of our favourite gowns ever.

Amy Adams looking diaphanous at last year’s Oscars.

Downton‘s Michelle Dockery wowed in this metallic number at this year’s Golden Globes. We adored the simplicity of this embroidered dress paired with Michelle’s fuss-free beauty.

Zooey Deschanel was one of Oscar’s most regular fans, bringing a modern playfulness to his already feminine collections.

Although she also reminded us that de la Renta’s work was rooted in an old school elegance.

So iconic was Oscar de la Renta to the fashionable American public, an episode of Sex and the City was unofficially dedicated to one of his creations. Carrie Bradshaw’s Russian lover, Aleksandr Petrovsky, gifted her a pink dress in the fina season. While happily ever after was not on the cards for this pair, we’re guessing that number survived every fictional wardrobe clear out.
