Watch: 100 Years of Iranian Beauty

Watch: 100 Years of Iranian Beauty

Cut.com’s 100 Years of Beauty video series is one of the smartest beauty events to happen on the web in recent years.

See 100 Years of Beauty Standards in One Video.

Each video tackles beauty trends from 1910 to 2010 in an engaging time-lapse format. The first video looked at how white women have done their hair and beauty during the past ten decades. The next video looked at standards of beauty among black women. Both of these videos presented beauty trends through a western lens, this video shakes things up.

The third video, and perhaps our favourite out of the entire project so far, looks at a century of Iranian beauty. It’s more than a beauty video and encompasses the social and political change in this most interesting of countries. The headscarf disappears for the decades in the middle. The veil was banned in the 1930s until the 1980s, which saw the hijab reinstated as mandatory following the revolution in 1979.

The revolutionary Green Movement of the noughties, which saw citizens demand the removal of president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from office, is referenced strongly towards the end, as model Sabrina Sarajy swipes green paint across her cheeks.
