On the January/February cover of IMAGE magazine, make-up artist Mary Ellen Darby created a rounded wing eyeliner that could rival that created by Pat McGrath at Tom Ford SS18. Here, she tells us how to recreate the look.

             PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEX HUTCHINSON

STYLED BY CORINA GAFFEY

MAKE-UP BY MARY ELLEN DARBY

HAIR BY DANIELLE GARNER AT WILDFLOWER HAIR SALON

PHOTOGRAPHED IN THE NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS, GLASNEVIN

What was your inspiration for the look you created?

It was an eyeliner evolution on the catwalk for SS18. For the January/February cover of IMAGE – it was all about the new season prints and colours with a tropical hint. Taking inspiration for the tropical National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, where we shot our cover story – I envisioned her to be deep in the jungle.
MAC Lipstick in Brave, €20

How did you create the winged flicks?

I wanted to create a look that embraced her effortlessly cool strong demeanour. Keeping the skin paired back using MAC Strobe Cream, €10, for a little luminosity and MAC Weightless Foundation, €36.50. The main focus was on the eyes. I created an exaggerated smudged wing using MAC Fluidline Gel Liner in Blacktrack, €21, applying that using a MAC Mascara Fan Brush to give it that edgy undefined look. I didn’t use any mascara – letting the liner take the focal point. Nothing on the brows either just a simple brush upwards and a slight stain on the lips using MAC Lipstick in Brave, €20.

What products should I try to create this look myself?

When creating this look on yourself – I suggest using MAC Fluidline Gel Liner in Blacktrack. Applying it with an angular brush makes it a little easier to create. I always love to pair it with bare skin if you dare!
